Word of the week: MappyHealth
MappyHealth: MappyHealth mines through Twitter data in search of health term trends that could help to predict disease outbreaks. Each tweet associated with any of the 223 health terms that MappyHealth tracks is analyzed against a set of conditions with qualifier words; each of these qualifier words gives each user the ability to see disease trends as they relate to a certain geography, vaccination or condition. For example, if there is a spike in the number of tweets about Influenza between a specific time period within a certain geography, it could be indicative of a pending outbreak in that area. MappyHealth’s ability to track disease trends through Twitter can increase awareness of outbreaks, infections and health campaigns while furthering innovation and research that will enhance population health awareness and trends. Available as a mobile app, MappyHealth further illustrates the impact social media can have on healthcare.
