Word of the week: Gamification

By Word of the Week on July 12th, 2013

Gamification is the application of game theory concepts to non-game activities. This theory is being implemented by B2B and B2C marketers worldwide in an effort to increase engagement among target audiences. As a result of competitive human nature, gamification often proves to be a successful method to motivate audiences while elevating brand awareness. Popular social media sites have adopted gamification. LinkedIn successfully integrated gamification into its marketing strategy by displaying the completeness percentage of its users' pages while encouraging them to reach 100 percent with suggestions on how to meet that mark. This campaign resulted in increased activity by current users. In addition, Foursquare rewards users for "check-ins" by awarding them with badges based on their activity, which gives them a sense of pride and encourages continual check-ins. Overall, gamification offers a fun and interactive way to drive your audience towards your strategic business goals.
