Word of the week: disruptive innovation

Disruptive innovation is the introduction of new technology, devices or services that help create a new market demand and value network by disrupting the way technology is currently used in an industry. The term applies to innovations that improve a process in ways that the market does not expect and can often shake up an industry by replacing an established technology. In HIT, common examples include the use of smart devices or check-in automation services, which may one day redefine the delivery and quality of care. Disruptive innovations for 2015 include wearable and mobile health devices such as the Fitbit, autonomous vehicles and 3D printing and robotics.
