Going to war on Twitter
Over the past couple of weeks, tensions between Israel and Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip have escalated to heights not seen in nearly four years. This is a unique conflict, and many people around the world are not fully aware of the history and circumstances surrounding it. So leaders of both sides have launched a public relations campaign with the goal of education in mind. As with any effective PR initiative, social media—in this case, Twitter—is a key component.
For the latest news on the events in the Middle East, I encourage you to follow @IDFSpokesperson, the official Twitter of the Israel Defense Forces, and @AlqassamBrigade, the official Twitter of the Alqassam Brigades, which is the military wing of Hamas, Gaza’s governing party. Each of these accounts provides updates on tactics and operations currently underway, along with more informational tweets explaining each side’s position in the conflict and justification for the actions being taken.
Regardless of your personal take on the situation, it is rare that we are provided with an unfiltered account of such significant world events. Whether it’s connecting your brand with consumers or industry influencers, chatting with an athlete or celebrity or following the minute-by-minute developments of something as serious as an international conflict, the power of social media is undeniable.
