Word of the Week: Enterprise Social Graph

Enterprise Social Graph: An Enterprise Social Graph is the representation, in the form of a graph, of the social network of a business and everything entailed within that organization including employee interaction to the exchange of information and the engagement of vendors and customers. Similar to the social graphs on Facebook and LinkedIn networks that allow you to globally map people and their relationships, an Enterprise Social Graph gives you the power to make better use of your business network by providing a more powerful way of understanding, analyzing and acting on key issues. Additionally, because the Enterprise Social Graph utilizes both internal and external social perspectives, it can provide greater insight into marketplace conditions, customer demand and product development.

Word of the Week: Medigram

Medigram: Medigram is a secure, HIPAA-compliant group messaging system for medical professionals. Medigram’s messaging platform allows medical professionals and teams to communicate with each other through various outlets including traditional computers or through its mobile app on the iPhone or Android. Medigram’s arrival during the Electronic Age is pivotal considering new privacy laws regarding electronic health records and medical information. For instance, the HIPAA Security Act, which requires certain safeguards to protect and maintain the confidentiality of medical electronic protected information, makes it difficult for those in the healthcare sector to exchange HIPAA-related information via technology. However, with the use of Medigram, medical professionals can rest assured that they are exchanging medical information in a secure place – even on their cell phones.

Word of the Week: Instagram

Instagram: Instagram is a mobile app that allows you to apply filters to photos taken on a mobile device. Each photo taken can then be shared with both friends and strangers on various social media networks including Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr. Instagram was just purchased this week for $1 billion  by Facebook. You may remember that not too long ago, we featured One Billion as a previous Word of the Week; One Billion stood for the number of members that Facebook had just reached. Now that Facebook owns Instagram (which will retain its independence so it can still be utilized by other social media outlets), it renders endless possibilities for all social media users. For instance, Instagram currently displays no ads within the app, however this is sure to change with the Facebook acquisition and could potentially create a profitable field for advertising. Moreover, the acquisition will provide Instagram users with additional features such as the ability to edit previously stored photos with filters. Instagram will most likely be a trending social media topic in the coming months.

Word of the Week: TweetReach

TweetReach: TweetReach is a simple tool for obtaining a quick snapshot of the level of exposure for your tweets. By entering any search term, such as a user name, keyword, hashtag or URL, you can get an exact number of people who saw the tweet(s) as well as total impressions. This provides insight into how influential a user is, as well as how actively engaged his or her followers are. In addition to total impressions, the tool lists the user names of all the tweeters who contributed to the spreading of the term, as well as how many impressions each user is responsible for. TweetReach will provide an instant report for the 50 most recent tweets found using a particular search term, and full reports are also available to purchase.

Word of the Week: One Billion

One Billion: Why is this number important? Because in 2012, Facebook is expected to reach one billion users. It wasn’t the first or last social network, but it’s clearly the most popular, and Facebook currently sets the standard for social networks and Internet destinations in general. Here are some numbers provide context as to how significant Facebook’s achieving one billion users will be. One in about seven people on Earth will have a Facebook account, but even more staggering is that almost 50 percent of the world’s Internet users (a number much lower than the world’s total population) will be on Facebook. Facebook ranks at or near the top of several most-visited website lists and often competes for this ranking with Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft, which each have several sites and offerings within their web properties. Facebook also plans to follow in LinkedIn’s footsteps and go public during 2012, so it should be a big year.

Word of the Week: Bashtag

Bashtag: Bashtag is a brand new term, perhaps coined just a few weeks ago in this article from Forbes, that refers to a Twitter hashtag gone awry. The article provides the example of McDonald’s promoting the hashtag #McDStories with the expectation that tweeters would share fond memories of the fast food chain. Instead, tweets turned negative (for example: “These #McDStories never get old, kinda like a box of McDonald’s 10 piece Chicken McNuggets left in the sun for a week”), and McDonald’s quickly backed off from the campaign. Social media is a powerful and important marketing tool for all industries, but this example serves as a reminder to always use caution when executing a campaign online. McDonald’s couldn’t have seen this coming, but others can learn from this and avoid having their own hashtags turn into bashtags.
